Laud, William

Laud, William
(1573–1645)
   Archbishop and Politician.
Laud was born in Reading, as the son of a tailor. He was educated at the University of Oxford and was ordained in 1601. A determined high churchman, he became Dean of Gloucester in 1616, Bishop of St David’s in 1621, Bishop of Bath and Wells in 1626, Bishop of London in 1629 and Archbishop of Canterbury in 1633. His religious views accorded with those of King Charles i and he played an important part in the King’s government. As Chancellor of the University of Oxford, he introduced several important reforms. He aroused the hostility of the Puritans by his attempts to enforce uniformity of liturgical practice on the English Church. He also tried to impose a new liturgy in Scotland and he introduced new Canons to Convocation proclaiming the divine right of kings. In 1641, he was impeached by the Long Parliament and imprisoned. He was brought to trial in 1644 and was executed for treason the following year. Laud was an able administrator, but, like his royal master, he lamentably failed to read the mood of the times.
